Best Coffee Maker for on the Go

Barsetto BAH010N Portable Hand Press Mini Espresso Coffee Machine Review

Barsetto BAH010N ReviewThe Barsetto BAH010N is compact and perfect for on the go! Compatible with both grounds and pods, and at just 5.6 x 5.1 x 10.4 inches and 1.3 pounds, you can easily make delicious coffee wherever, whenever.

The hand operated system sports a double wall to ensure that heat from the water does not penetrate the device when in operation, so you can safely enjoy making coffee when out and about. A cup cover at the base of the coffee maker means that you don’t need to worry about carrying an extra mug around, and the ability to dissemble the device makes for quick and easy cleaning.

The only downsides to this machine are the fact that you do have to manually pump it, which can take some time, and you do need to put hot water into the system as it does not boil water itself.

ProsCons
Compact and lightweight
Can use pods or grounds
Easy to clean
Must use hot water
Can be slow

Best for speciality variety

Ninja Coffee Bar Thermal Carafe System, Stainless Carafe (CF097) Review

Ninja Coffee Bar Thermal Carafe System(CF097) ReviewThe Ninja Coffee Bar Thermal Carafe System really is as cool as the name suggests. With it, you have the ability to create the best custom coffees such as classic , extra rich brews, or even iced coffee. Not only that but there are multiple serving size options, from a mere mug to an entire carafe full.

The built in frother means that you don’t need to dirty multiple devices to get that delicious frothy drink that you crave, as this system can make the perfect brew all in your favourite mug.

The touch screen and sleek design make this one of the most futuristic coffee makers on the market, and with all it’s settings and options, the only problem you will have is which to choose!

The only disadvantage we can find for this coffee maker is the lack of a warming plate, meaning that when making a full carafe, the coffee can go cold quite quickly.

ProsCons
Multiple speciality coffee options
Size options
Recipe book and carafes included
No warming plate

Best Budget Coffee Machine

Hamilton Beach 49980A Single Serve Coffee Brewer and Full Pot Coffee Maker Review

Hamilton Beach 49980A Single Serve Coffee Brewer and Full Pot Coffee Maker ReviewWith the option of making just one mug of coffee, a travel mug or a full pot, the Hamilton Beach 49980A ranks as our best budget machine. Not only can you choose how much coffee to make, but the price tag is low enough to be affordable to even the tightest of budgets.

This coffee maker has a programmable timer so you can have a brew ready exactly as you wake up, or when you get home from work. If you don’t have the time to grind or scoop out your own grounds, then just use one of your favourite brands of pod! (K Cups not compatible).

Whilst this drinks maker does have a lot of pros, we did notice a couple of cons to consider. Firstly, the travel mug is not included, however you can alter the section to hold pretty much any mug you own. Secondly, you will need to use paper filters with this model as there is no mesh filter included. This might not be an issue for some, but we just thought we’d better put it out there.

ProsCons
Programmable timer
Pods or grounds
Single mug or full carafe options
Low price tag
Uses paper filters
Travel mug not included

Best with a milk reservoir

Mr. Coffee ECMP1000 Café Barista Premium Espresso/Cappuccino System Review

Mr. Coffee ECMP1000 Café Barista Premium Espresso Cappuccino System ReviewThe Mr. Coffee ECMP1000 can brew your favourite drink effortlessly, be it a cappuccino, latté, espresso or even a mocha. No matter how extravagant your favourite coffee, this system will make it! Included is a recipe book so you can sip your morning brew content in the knowledge that everybody’s tastes are catered for.

You can choose from single or double shots of espresso, while the inbuilt milk frother provides a perfect topping every time. The milk reservoir is detachable for easy cleaning and is even fridge and dishwasher safe.

The only downside of this machine is that it can be a little loud especially when the milk frother is in use, and you need the pod attachment if you do want to use pods.

ProsCons
Recipe book included
Inbuilt milk frother and distributer
Double shot option
Dishwasher safe parts
Can be loud
Attachment for pods sold separately

Best with built in coffee grinder

Breville BES870XL Barista Express Espresso Machine Review

Breville BES870XL Barista Express Espresso Machine ReviewThe Breville BES870XL is the sleekest and most impressive machine on the list, truly one for hardcore coffee lovers. With an integrated bean grinder that grinds straight into a professional style portafilter, your coffee can go from bean to mug in a heartbeat, meaning that the grounds don’t have time to lose their freshness and flavour. You are also given the ability to choose whether you want fine or coarse grounds for different strengths.

The 67 fl. oz. removable water tank includes a replaceable water filter to ensure that you don’t have any impurities making your drink taste less than perfect while the volume control allows you the choice between 1 and 2 cups, a manual override or even customizable shot volumes.

An integrated stainless steel water coil controls the temperature of the water ensuring that your grounds never get burned but your coffee comes out of the maker deliciously hot. After use, a warning light will alert you when the system needs cleaning.  A cleaning kit is included in the box which we found to be very helpful, just ensure that you read the cleaning instructions before starting!

For those who love their frothy coffee, a steam wand is included so you are able to whip up a creamy latté or a chocolate topped cappuccino in no time at all.

Finally, the drip tray is completely removable and even includes an “empty me” indicator, so you never reach the overflowing stage!

The only downside we found with this coffee maker is that you really do need to use beans which can be a little more expensive if you want to make the most of it. You can taste the difference between freshly ground beans and a bag of ready ground beans. Also, replacement parts can be quite difficult to get hold of for this drinks maker.

ProsCons
Inbuilt bean grinder
Inbuilt milk frothing wand
"clean me" and "empty drip tray" warning indicators
Professional grade machine
Full cleaning kit included
Temperature monitoring coil
Coarse or fine grounds options
High Price
Need to use beans to get the best out of the machine
Difficult to find replacement parts

Buyers Guide

Finding the best coffee maker for you and your home can be difficult, what with all the different options and features you might not know where to start. We’ve done the hard work for you and put together this handy buyers guide which will give a detailed description of all the best features you can expect to find in a coffee maker, so you know you’re getting everything you need, and not everything you don’t.

Single Serve Coffee Makers

Mr. Coffee ECMP1000 Café Barista Premium Espresso Cappuccino System ReviewAre you a lone coffee drinker in your household? Or perhaps you’re always the first up and dashing out of the door without time for your morning coffee? Whatever the reason, some households benefit from single serve coffee makers more than making a full carafe.

Single serve coffee makers do exactly what it says on the tin, they give you 1 serving. You can buy single serve coffee makers that use pods, which come in a variety of flavours and need only be put into the slot with very little cleaning afterwards, or grounds, which are your freshly ground coffee beans.

Drip Coffee Makers

Drip Coffee MakerDrip coffee makers make a full carafe of coffee, usually around 10 mugs. These are best for when you want to serve coffee to all your friends or family. Drip coffee makers usually have a hot plate to ensure that the coffee does not go cold before you finish the jug.

This style of coffee maker often use disposable paper filters so make sure you check this out before buying. They are not compatible with pods.

Some drip coffee makers come with a programmable timer and automatic shutoff which means you can load up the system the night before and wake up to freshly brewed coffee in the morning, perfect for those mornings when you need to rush out of the house. The automatic shutoff means that the system will turn itself off after a set period of time, so you don’t need to worry about the appliance being left on all day.

Cappuccino and Espresso Makers

Ninja Coffee Bar Thermal Carafe System(CF097) ReviewThese machines are for those who like their speciality coffee. Cappuccino and espresso makers will mean that you no longer have to run to your local coffee shop to get that perfect cappuccino in the morning, you can make one with no hassle from the comfort of your own home.

Most cappuccino and espresso makers force water at high pressure through coffee grounds, giving the resulting brew a strong and rich flavour. With one of these machines, you can make the best cappuccinos, espressos or even creamy lattés.

Most systems use grounds but some do use pods so be careful which system you choose.

Pods vs Grounds vs Beans

The difference between coffee pods, grounds and beans is often a source of confusion. There is good reason that all 3 exist and you need to check what you would like to use before checking and purchasing your system.

Pods

Coffee podsCoffee Pods are perhaps the easiest option. With very little cleaning up and lots of brands and flavours to choose from, coffee pods are a popular choice for those who intend to make a single mug of coffee with their drinks maker. Flavour options include morning blends, caramel, vanilla, cinnamon and many others and you can even choose pods from your favourite brands such as Starbucks.

Pods are not all the same however, and you need to ensure that you choose the right pods for your system. Some systems are able to use any pods, and brands such as Starbucks utilise K cups which are a hard carton like pod. Other systems require softer pods which can look like tea bags, so make sure you check before purchasing a coffee maker.

Grounds

coffee groundsSome systems will only accept coffee grounds. These are coffee beans that have been ground into granules that are then inserted into the coffee filter. You can buy ready ground beans in packets, simply scoop out your desired (or the specified) amount of grounds, put it into your systems filter or paper filter if one is required, and start brewing!

Beans

coffee beansFor the freshest and most flavoursome aromatic coffee, freshly grinding your own coffee beans is definitely the best way to go. Beans stay fresh for longer than grounds, exhibit a delicious aroma as soon as they are ground (yes, even before brewing!) and are much easier to store and transport. That’s all before mentioning that the price is much lower!

The only downside to buying coffee beans is that you do need a grinder in order to use them. Some systems have them inbuilt, but if you don’t want to shell out for an expensive system with an inbuilt grinder, then you can pick up coffee grinders separately for fairly low prices. Most can also grind your herbs and spices!

Milk Frothers

CappuccinoAh the milk frother. The device that makes your coffee just a bit more special. The truth is, that luxury cappuccino isn’t so hard to make at home. With one of these devices you can have as many frothy coffees as you want, without spending a fortune in a luxury coffee house.

Some systems come with milk frothers built in. If you are purchasing an espresso and cappuccino maker or a high end barista style coffee system, then you might be lucky enough to have one included in your purchase. If not, don’t worry, you can buy milk frothers separately and even top your instant coffee (gasp!) to make it look like your coffee house favourite.

We find that heated milk frothers are the best as they gently heat the milk whilst whipping it, making a more foamy top, but if you don’t want to spend the extra, then there are a number of handheld whisks that can also do the job.

If your system sports a milk wand, never fear, whilst they do take some getting used to, once you master the technique the results are second to none. We’ve found the best way to use one is to have the milk in a mug or jug (it will stir and then expand quite a bit so be sure there is enough space) put the milk wand into the milk an hold the mug or jug at a 45 degree angle whilst the frother works its magic. After your milk is all bubbly, bang the mug or jug on the counter a few times to pop an big bubbles for a smoother froth. Pour on your coffee (you may need to scoop the thick froth out) and serve with a dusting of chocolate powder or a drizzle of caramel sauce. Yum!

Coffee Bean Grinders

coffee grinder As previously mentioned, using coffee beans makes the most aromatic and rich coffee. To use beans, you will need to grind them before brewing your coffee. Some systems come with inbuilt grinders, and whilst these are excellent systems, they can be somewhat pricey.

If your system does not have an inbuilt bean grinder, never fear! There are a number of different coffee grinders on the market starting at reasonably low prices. With these devices you can even grind your own spices!

Coffee Filters

coffee filtersBefore you can start making your coffee, you need to be sure that you have the filter for your system.

Some coffee makers use paper filters which must be disposed of after use, these can be bought in multipacks and don’t require washing after use.

Some systems use a permanent basket style filter, which can be washed and reused. If your system uses a permanent filter then they are often included with the machine.

Be sure to check which filters your system needs and that they are included to ensure you aren’t disappointed when you get it out of the box!
