Vegetable Spiralizer and Zoodle Maker

Ave 60 Vegetable Spiralizer Review We loved this spiralizer by Ave 60. The gravity assisted design makes it super easy to operate and ensures less wastage, while the 4 blades allow you to get creative with your veggie pasta, making it easier to get kids to eat healthily.

We found the suction cup to be effective most of the time; however it would occasionally lose suction and have to be reset. This wasn’t a major issue for us, as it will work on any kitchen surface as opposed to a clamp.

The blades are easily stored inside the machine, so as not to get lost or misplaced, and the high quality materials used in the unit mean that it is long lasting and will not break easily.

We also found that this model washes by hand easily, although if you prefer it is also safe to put on the top rack of your dishwasher.

  • High quality materials
  • 1 year warranty
  • 30 day money back guarantee
  • Blade storage on board

Best Electric Spiralizer

Hamilton Beach 3-in-1 Electric Spiralizer

Hamilton Beach 3-in-1 Electric Spiralizer ReviewWith 3 cutting cones this electric spiralizer by Hamilton Beach makes creating vegetti easier than ever.

We were a little skeptical as to why you would need an electric model at first but when we tried it out this machine makes it so much easier to spiralize even the toughest veg. Handheld and crank models can sometimes struggle with harder veg such as sweet potaotes, however this machine goes through them with no trouble at all!

Perfect for those with weaker grip or those who simply don’t want to go through the effort of overcoming the learning curve involved with handheld and crank models.

Pros

  • 3 blades
  • Dishwasher Safe Parts
  • Cleaning Brush Included
  • Compacts for easy Storage

Cons

  • Takes up more space than a handheld model

Buyers Guide

The Best Veggetti

We tested loads of different vegetables in the spiralizers that we reviewed to bring you a list of the best veg for spiralizing.

  • Zucchini – this is our
absolute favourite vegetable to spiralize as it is easy to cut and comes the closest in texture and taste to any other veg that we tested.

  • Carrot – depending on the model that you choose you can have varying degrees of success with carrots. Ensuring that you use a wide carrot will give the best spiral results whereas smaller carrots may result in little crescents. Spiralized carrot provides a good crunchy texture when added to stir fries and salads.

  • Potato – potato spirals create a nice texture when used as an alternative to pasta, however be careful if you are trying to cut down on carbs as potato is a high carb choice.

  • Beetroot – beetroot is very easy to spiralize and adds a splash of colour and fun to any dish, the flavour also adds a little something extra to dishes such as stir fry or as a replacement for pasta.

  • Apple – apple spiralizes well with a wide blade option. Spiralized apple can be used to create apple crisps, simply spiralize, sprinkle with a little cinnamon and pop in the oven. A perfect healthy alternative to crisps.

  • Sweet Potato – as a harder vegetable, sweet potato can be tricky to spiralize using a handheld model, so we would suggest using an electric or crank model if you wish to use this veg. Adds a nice sweet yet crunchy texture and taste to stir fries or can be steamed for a softer pasta alternative.

  • Eggplant – eggplant makes an excellent pasta alternative and even looks like the real thing! Simply pop in a skillet with a dash of olive oil and soften to your liking, then use in the place of pasta in your favourite dishes.

Types of Spiralizer

Electric

Electric models are super easy to use and our favourite way of making veggetti. Whilst they are more expensive, the ease of use means that there’s no need to spend time getting used to using your machine as with a handheld model and the noodles come out perfect every time.

Shop All Electric Spiralizers

Crank

Our second favourite model is the crank model. This model is not electric and has a hand crank which turns the veg. If you prefer not to have an electric model but still want perfect noodles right from the start then this one is the way to go!

Shop All Crank Spiralizers

Handheld

Handheld models are the most fiddly and can take some time to get used to, however they are very compact and light so can be packed for on the move and stored very easily. They are also the cheapest models. We recommend the handheld model if you want to use your spiralizer on the go or have limited kitchen space.

Some spiralizers will come with extras included, so make sure you get the best value for money!

Best Crank Machine

Marcato 8320 Atlas Pasta Machine

Marcato 8320 Atlas Pasta Machine ReviewThe Marcato 8320 Atlas Pasta Machine is a beautiful piece of machinery made in Italy, the very home of pasta, making it a natural choice for our list. This machine has no problem making lasagne sheets, fettuccine and taglionlini in minutes and with a choice of 10 different positions you can even decide how thick you want your pasta to be.

We particularly liked the fact that the rollers have a rough surface, which means the pasta does not come out completely smooth but is instead porous and able to soak up whatever sauce and flavours it is served with.

This machine is operated by a hand crank and comes with a pasta cutter, crank, clamp to keep it secure when in use and a set of instructions to get you started.

Not only that but this machine comes with an impressive 10 year manufacturer’s warranty.

  • Sleek design will look good in any kitchen

  • 10 different pasta thickness settings
  • Rough rollers create porous pasta to soak up flavours
  • 10 year warranty

Cons

  • Not the cheapest option

OxGord Pasta Maker

OxGord pasta maker reviewThis machine by OxGord is a no frills model. With a plain exterior and cheap and cheerful price tag to match this is definitely one for those who like simple models or those who are on a budget.

Though cheaper and less fancy looking, this is an impressive pasta maker for the price, giving you the ability to make home made spaghetti , linguine and many more types of pasta with the 3 included blade attachments. It is also possible to choose the thickness of pasta with 9 thickness settings.

This is a crank operated machine and we love the fact that for ease of storage the crank is removable!

OxGord also offer a 100% Customer Satisfaction Guarantee, stating that if you aren’t completely satisfied at any time then you may return it for a full refund – it is slightly unclear if you are able to return it after 10 years of hard use, however we expect that reasonable requests will be accepted.

  • Cheap and cheerful
  • 3 blade attachments included
  • 9 thickness settings
  • Crank is removable for easy storage

Best Crank For Ravioli

VonShef 3 in 1 Stainless Steel Pasta Roller Maker

VonShef 3 in 1 Stainless Steel Pasta Roller reviewThis VonShef Pasta Maker is a a sleek stainless steel machine perfect for ravioli lovers, this model can crank out homemade ravioli with any filling without the need for extra moulds. We love this feature because it saves time and effort and the end result is really impressive.

Not only does this machine save on time making ravioli but also on kneading and rolling time. This machine will do it all for you, simply combine the ingredients, select a blade and thickness setting and pop them into the feeder section and let the machine work its magic.

We like that the table clamp is included in this one because when you’re pushing the dough through the machine it can be very frustrating if the machine is moving, the clamp works really well to keep the machine set in place whilst in use.

Pros

  • Ravioli attachment
  • Stainless steel machine
  • 3 in 1 – this machine can knead and roll the dough
  • Clamp included
  • Care guide and pasta measure included

Cons

  • More detailed instructions on the ravioli attachment would be helpful

A slightly more expensive option but worth splashing a bit of extra cash on, the STX International Pasta Factory takes all the work out of pasta making. All you need to do with this machine is put the measured out ingredients into the chamber, choose the style of pasta you want and press go!

We absolutely love that you can have perfect homemade pasta every time with this machine and can be whipping up the sauce while the machine does all the work for you.

There are also 9 pasta variety discs included with the machine including ravioli, spaghetti and macaroni. Not only this but we love the fact that there the ravioli disc doubles up as a dumpling disc and there is even a sausage making adaptor and pasta drying rack included. This makes the STX International Pasta Factory the best value for money on the list.

  • Completely automated pasta making
  • Ravioli disk doubles up as a dumpling disk
  • Sausage making adaptor included

 Best Branded

Philips Avance Pasta Maker

Philips Avance Pasta Maker ReviewThis sleek looking Avance Pasta Maker by Philips is a completely automatic and is able to quickly and simply knead and extrude a pound of fresh, homemade pasta in only 15 minutes.

We loved how simple this machine is to use, within 20 minutes of opening the box we had our first batch of pasta made and ready to cook. The best part is that you can leave this machine making the pasta while you make the sauce and have a meal ready from start to finish in as little as half an hour.

We liked the 4 shaping discs that came with this machine, however we would have liked there to have been thinner options – it is possible to buy thinner discs however these are extras. The included discs are for spaghetti, penne, fettuccini and lasagne which can be stored in the handy drawer at the bottom of the machine.

This machine also comes with a measuring cup, cleaning cool and even a recipe booklet to get you up and running.

Once finished, cleaning this machine is fairly easy as a lot of the parts come off and are even dishwasher safe.

Pros

  • Completely automatic system – add ingredients and go

What we learned about pasta making!

D’oh! – Dough Guide

There’s a lot of conflicting information out there about the best way to make pasta dough, so while we were testing out the machines we decided to put some do’s and don’ts to the test. Here’s what we found:

  • Don’t add salt to your pasta dough! We thought this seemed a relatively harmless addition to the dough mix that might add a little extra flavour, however we found that adding even a little salt to the dough made it too crumbly to work with. The best time to add salt (if you want to) is during the cooking process. Add a little salt to the water to help flavour the pasta.
  • Do add small amounts of vegetable juices to add flavour and colour to your pasta. Make sure you use them in place of liquids already in the recipes and not in addition or else your dough will become too wet.
  • Don’t add extra moisture! At times our dough seemed a little dry so we decided to try softening it by adding a small amount of water. This turned out to be a mistake. The dough was then too sticky and even when it seemed alright to handle it was getting stuck in the pasta makers which struggled to cut it properly.
  • Do keep kneading! When your dough seems too dry and you’re tempted to add a little extra moisture, try kneading the dough a little longer. We found that eventually the dough would soften and become almost silky in texture and this made the best pasta.
  • Don’t coat the dough in more flour when rolling it out if it seems too wet. If your dough is too wet and you simply coat the outside in flour then the inside remains wet and can get stuck when going through the pasta machine. This also won’t make the best pasta! Try to make sure all your ingredients are fully combined and the dough has a silky feel before rolling.
  • Do make sure your dough is covered if you’re doing more than one batch and rolling them separately. Allowing the dough to dry out before it is rolled and cut will make working with it really difficult so it’s always best to make sure it’s covered to prevent drying.

Discs

The main types of pasta discs that come with machines are usually for spaghetti, lasagne sheets and linguine. However, there are many more varieties of pasta to try. Some machines even come with 9 discs. If yours doesn’t, brands such as Philips sell different blades separately so you can choose to add to your collection as you please. Why not try your hand at making macaroni, penne or even ravioli?

Thickness settings

Most machines have different settings that give you the option to choose how thick or thin you would like your pasta. Different machines have different settings and some may not even give a choice of changing thickness, so be sure to check that the machine you choose has this feature if it’s important to you.

Kneading and rolling machines

Some people like to knead and roll their pasta by hand, however this can be time consuming and hard work, not to mention the quality of pasta can be inconsistent. If you prefer to use your time to be making your sauce and want homemade top quality pasta and sauce on the table in minimal time, then a fully automatic machine is the way to go. These machines only need you to measure out the ingredients and put them in and the machine will do the rest for you!

Shop All Automatic Machines

Crank Machines

VonShef 3 in 1 Stainless Steel Pasta Roller reviewThese machines are often cheaper than those that are fully automated and use a manual hand crank to cut the pasta. If you go for a crank machine it might be best to find one which has a clamp to keep it in place while you’re using it and a removable crank to make it easier to store.

Caring for your pasta machine

To keep your pasta machine in good working order it will need a little TLC after every use.

There’s nothing worse than coming to use an appliance and realising that you didn’t take the time to clean it last time. Not cleaning your machine after every use is not only annoying when you want to use it again but can also damage the machine. Be sure to use a brush or cleaning tool to ensure all dough is removed to avoid any build-up which could affect the quality of your next batch of pasta!

Some pasta makers even have detachable parts  that can go in  the dishwasher to make things a little easier!

That concludes our article on the best pasta maker 2018, we hope we’ve helped you come a little closer to making wonderful homemade pasta! We would love to hear your views on the article and how your pasta making is going in the comments below!

5 Best Dash Cams 2018

Perfect for any car for someone with a low budget, this model records in full HD 1080p and the 1.5” LCD screen on the device allows you to see the recording in realtime but also supports playback so you can check what your cam captured. Small enough to be completely unobtrusive, this cam can be hidden behind your mirror.

We found this model really easy to use and particularly like the fact that the device turns on and starts recording when the engine is turned on, and saves and powers down when the engine is turned off as it plugs into the cigarette lighter.

  • Full HD 1080p recording
  • LCD Screen supports playback
  • Motion Detection
  • Loop recording

Best Dash Cam With SD Card Included

OldShark Dash Cam

Oldshark dash cam review

The OldShark dash cam is a sleek little device with plenty of good features and even a 32gb SD card included. With loop recording, running out of space is never an issue and the 1080p HD wide angle recording with night vision means that no matter what time of day or night, the quality of footage is always high quality.

This dash cam also comes with motion detect and g-sensor features with unexpected incident lock, meaning that if an incident should occur, causing a collision with the vehicle or emergency breaking, then the footage will automatically be saved and locked so that it isn’t recorded over. We really like this feature because it means not worrying about continuing to use the cam after an incident for fear of losing the footage.

Perhaps the most useful feature on this cam is the fact that the rear view camera doubles up as a parking monitor, making it easier to squeeze into those tight parking spots.

Not only does this cam have all the great features mentioned, but it also comes with an 18 month warranty, lifetime customer service and a 30 day money back guarantee, so there’s nothing to lose!

Pros

  • 32gb SD card included
  • G-sensors
  • Motion sensors
  • Emergency lock
  • Parking monitor
  • Night vision
  • Full 1080p
  • Loop recording
  • Front and rear cameras
  • 18 month warranty

Cons

APEMAN 1080P FHD In Car Dash Cam

APEMAN dash cam review

This is a neat little dash cam from APEMAN with a durable case and handy LED screen for playback. Unlike cheaper models, this cam comes with G-sensor, motion detection and parking monitoring. For the price this is an impressive dash cam.

We particularly like the fact that when your car is parked up, if the cam detects motion or vibrations then the cam with record for 30 seconds to be sure not to miss anything important. This will be particularly useful for those whose cars are not kept in garages and could be targeted for break ins or vandalism.

Pros

  • Full 1080p HD recording
  • 3 inch LED Screen large enough to view footage without needing a bigger screen
  • Easy to install
  • G-sensor
  • Motion detection ]
  • Parking monitoring
  • Loop recording
  • 1 Year Warranty

Cons

  • SD card not included
  • Suction cup included isn’t very strong

YI 2.7″ Screen Full HD Dashboard Camera

YI Dash Cam ReviewThis little dash cam from YI is surprisingly sleek and beautifully designed. We love that it doesn’t have the regular dash cam look and is more like a small digital camera.

Unlike cheaper models, this product comes with ADAS(Advanced Driver Assistance Systems)  which will warn the driver if the vehicle begins to stray from the lane. We found this really useful when driving on long straight roads such as highways for extended periods of time.

As well as these features, this cam comes with loop recording at full 1080pP at 60 FPS, meaning that it is able to easily capture details such as number plates from a distance, even in the dark.

We found it very easy to set up and the screen is perfect for video playback. The G-sensor works well and provides extra security and evidence in case anything should happen to the car when it is parked. These fantastic features make this dash cam a serious contender in our list.

Pros

  • G-sensors
  • HD recording
  • Loop recording
  • Lane Departure Warning System
  • ADAS(Advanced Driver Assistance Systems)

Cons

  • Slightly more expensive than other models
  • SD card not included

Best Luxury Dash Cam

EIVOTOR Dash Cam

EIVOTOR Dash Cam review

With front and rear dual lens, this EIVOTOR camera is worth the slightly higher cost. The gravity sensor works really well and can even sense when an emergency break takes place so it will never miss capturing an accident in progress. When this emergency recording mode activates, the video captured is automatically saved so it won’t be recorded over. A 140 degree wide angle lens means this camera will not miss a thing, and the 4.0” LCD display is bigger than that on most dash cams making playback much sharper on this device.

We particularly like the parking monitor mode which can automatically detect and save footage when the car is not in use. This is very useful for cars that are parked on roads and works really well.

The support for this product is also a major plus. With a 30 day no questions asked returns and exchange policy and 24 hour email response service for any issues of queries about the product.

Pros

  • Full 1080p recording
  • Front and rear cameras
  • G-sensor
  • Motion Detection
  • Parking Monitor
  • Loop recording
  • Easy to install

Cons

  • SD card not included

Buyers Guide

Buying a dashcam can seem like a minefield of lingo and confusing abbreviations, what is FCWS?! Do I really need motion sensors? Fear not, we’ve put together a user friendly buyer’s guide to help you work out which features you need, which you don’t and which add-ons will improve your experience!

LCD Screen

Perhaps one of the most sought after features in a dash cam is a screen. Having a screen allows you to see what the camera is capturing as well as some models providing the ability to play back captured footage without needing to remove the SD card and upload the footage into a computer.

G-sensors

G-sensors are simply gravity sensors, sometimes called an accelerometer. This allows the cam to recognise when a collision has occurred due to it sensing a fast change in acceleration. Some devices have an auto lock feature that will lock the footage when the g-sensors recognise a collision so you won’t lose the footage.

Motion Sensors & Parking Monitor

Motion sensors are often used for parking monitoring and allow dash cams to record when the engine is turned off, they are useful for when a car is parked and can capture anything from break ins to hit and runs as long as motion is detected.

Lane Departure Warning System & Forward Collision Warning System

These features are useful for long drives on the motorway. Lane departure warning system recognises road markings and will warn you if your vehicle is unintentionally straying into another lane. Forward collision warning system will recognise when a frontal collision is imminent by recognising slower or stationary vehicles in front and provide the driver with a warning.

Loop Recording

Loop recording simply means that the camera will continue to record over previously captured footage when space on the SD card runs out. This feature is useful as it means not worrying about running out of space or having to erase data from the card.

Auto On / Off

Auto on /off is another feature which can be incredibly useful as it means the camera powers on and off with the car, so no need to worry about doing this manually or forgetting and missing an incident.

Wide Dynamic Range & Night Vision

Wide dynamic range and night vision increase the capability of a dash cam to view number plates and other detail in low light or from a distance. This can make the difference between being able to report a collision with all the details and not being able to claim insurance after an incident.

Micro SD Card

dash cam micro sd cardSome dash cams come with an SD card, but in case the model that you have chosen doesn’t, be sure to opt for a good quality card to ensure that you don’t lose any important footage. We recommend SanDisk cards as they are a reliable brand with good customer support. This option also comes with an adaptor.

Shop All Micro SD Cards | Shop SanDisk

Dash Cam Holder

Dash cam mountThe majority of dash comes will come complete with a dash cam holder, however we have found at times that the holder is not substantially strong. It is worth investing in a strong and reliable holder to be sure that your camera is safe and secure. We recommend this dash cam mirror mount as it fits most dash cams and allows the cam to sit behind the mirror, therefore making it less likely to obstruct the drivers view.

Best Coffee Maker for on the Go

Barsetto BAH010N Portable Hand Press Mini Espresso Coffee Machine Review

Barsetto BAH010N ReviewThe Barsetto BAH010N is compact and perfect for on the go! Compatible with both grounds and pods, and at just 5.6 x 5.1 x 10.4 inches and 1.3 pounds, you can easily make delicious coffee wherever, whenever.

The hand operated system sports a double wall to ensure that heat from the water does not penetrate the device when in operation, so you can safely enjoy making coffee when out and about. A cup cover at the base of the coffee maker means that you don’t need to worry about carrying an extra mug around, and the ability to dissemble the device makes for quick and easy cleaning.

The only downsides to this machine are the fact that you do have to manually pump it, which can take some time, and you do need to put hot water into the system as it does not boil water itself.

Pros

  • Compact and lightweight
  • Can use pods or grounds
  • Easy to clean

Cons

  • Must use hot water
  • Can be slow

Best for speciality variety

Ninja Coffee Bar Thermal Carafe System, Stainless Carafe (CF097) Review

Ninja Coffee Bar Thermal Carafe System(CF097) ReviewThe Ninja Coffee Bar Thermal Carafe System really is as cool as the name suggests. With it, you have the ability to create the best custom coffees such as classic , extra rich brews, or even iced coffee. Not only that but there are multiple serving size options, from a mere mug to an entire carafe full.

The built in frother means that you don’t need to dirty multiple devices to get that delicious frothy drink that you crave, as this system can make the perfect brew all in your favourite mug.

The touch screen and sleek design make this one of the most futuristic coffee makers on the market, and with all it’s settings and options, the only problem you will have is which to choose!

The only disadvantage we can find for this coffee maker is the lack of a warming plate, meaning that when making a full carafe, the coffee can go cold quite quickly.

Pros

  • Multiple speciality coffee options
  • Size options
  • Recipe book and carafes included

Cons

  • No warming plate

Best Budget Coffee Machine

Hamilton Beach 49980A Single Serve Coffee Brewer and Full Pot Coffee Maker Review

Hamilton Beach 49980A Single Serve Coffee Brewer and Full Pot Coffee Maker ReviewWith the option of making just one mug of coffee, a travel mug or a full pot, the Hamilton Beach 49980A ranks as our best budget machine. Not only can you choose how much coffee to make, but the price tag is low enough to be affordable to even the tightest of budgets.

This coffee maker has a programmable timer so you can have a brew ready exactly as you wake up, or when you get home from work. If you don’t have the time to grind or scoop out your own grounds, then just use one of your favourite brands of pod! (K Cups not compatible).

Whilst this drinks maker does have a lot of pros, we did notice a couple of cons to consider. Firstly, the travel mug is not included, however you can alter the section to hold pretty much any mug you own. Secondly, you will need to use paper filters with this model as there is no mesh filter included. This might not be an issue for some, but we just thought we’d better put it out there.

Pros

  • Programmable timer
  • Pods or grounds
  • Single mug or full carafe options
  • Low price tag

Cons

  • Uses paper filters
  • Travel mug not included

Best with a milk reservoir

Mr. Coffee ECMP1000 Café Barista Premium Espresso/Cappuccino System Review

You can choose from single or double shots of espresso, while the inbuilt milk frother provides a perfect topping every time. The milk reservoir is detachable for easy cleaning and is even fridge and dishwasher safe.

The only downside of this machine is that it can be a little loud especially when the milk frother is in use, and you need the pod attachment if you do want to use pods.

Pros

  • Recipe book included
  • Inbuilt milk frother and distributer
  • Double shot option
  • Dishwasher safe parts

Cons

  • Can be loud
  • Attachment for pods sold separately

Best with built in coffee grinder

Breville BES870XL Barista Express Espresso Machine Review

Breville BES870XL Barista Express Espresso Machine ReviewThe Breville BES870XL is the sleekest and most impressive machine on the list, truly one for hardcore coffee lovers. With an integrated bean grinder that grinds straight into a professional style portafilter, your coffee can go from bean to mug in a heartbeat, meaning that the grounds don’t have time to lose their freshness and flavour. You are also given the ability to choose whether you want fine or coarse grounds for different strengths.

The 67 fl. oz. removable water tank includes a replaceable water filter to ensure that you don’t have any impurities making your drink taste less than perfect while the volume control allows you the choice between 1 and 2 cups, a manual override or even customizable shot volumes.

An integrated stainless steel water coil controls the temperature of the water ensuring that your grounds never get burned but your coffee comes out of the maker deliciously hot. After use, a warning light will alert you when the system needs cleaning.  A cleaning kit is included in the box which we found to be very helpful, just ensure that you read the cleaning instructions before starting!

For those who love their frothy coffee, a steam wand is included so you are able to whip up a creamy latté or a chocolate topped cappuccino in no time at all.

Finally, the drip tray is completely removable and even includes an “empty me” indicator, so you never reach the overflowing stage!

The only downside we found with this coffee maker is that you really do need to use beans which can be a little more expensive if you want to make the most of it. You can taste the difference between freshly ground beans and a bag of ready ground beans. Also, replacement parts can be quite difficult to get hold of for this drinks maker.

Pros

  • Inbuilt bean grinder
  • Inbuilt milk frothing wand
  • “clean me” and “empty drip tray” warning indicators
  • Professional grade machine
  • Full cleaning kit included
  • Temperature monitoring coil
  • Coarse or fine grounds options

Cons

  • High Price
  • Need to use beans to get the best out of the machine
  • Difficult to find replacement parts

Buyers Guide

Finding the best coffee maker for you and your home can be difficult, what with all the different options and features you might not know where to start. We’ve done the hard work for you and put together this handy buyers guide which will give a detailed description of all the best features you can expect to find in a coffee maker, so you know you’re getting everything you need, and not everything you don’t.

Single Serve Coffee Makers

Mr. Coffee ECMP1000 Café Barista Premium Espresso Cappuccino System ReviewAre you a lone coffee drinker in your household? Or perhaps you’re always the first up and dashing out of the door without time for your morning coffee? Whatever the reason, some households benefit from single serve coffee makers more than making a full carafe.

Single serve coffee makers do exactly what it says on the tin, they give you 1 serving. You can buy single serve coffee makers that use pods, which come in a variety of flavours and need only be put into the slot with very little cleaning afterwards, or grounds, which are your freshly ground coffee beans.

Shop All Single Serve Coffee Makers

Drip Coffee Makers

Drip Coffee MakerDrip coffee makers make a full carafe of coffee, usually around 10 mugs. These are best for when you want to serve coffee to all your friends or family. Drip coffee makers usually have a hot plate to ensure that the coffee does not go cold before you finish the jug.

This style of coffee maker often use disposable paper filters so make sure you check this out before buying. They are not compatible with pods.

Some drip coffee makers come with a programmable timer and automatic shutoff which means you can load up the system the night before and wake up to freshly brewed coffee in the morning, perfect for those mornings when you need to rush out of the house. The automatic shutoff means that the system will turn itself off after a set period of time, so you don’t need to worry about the appliance being left on all day.

Cappuccino and Espresso Makers

Ninja Coffee Bar Thermal Carafe System(CF097) ReviewThese machines are for those who like their speciality coffee. Cappuccino and espresso makers will mean that you no longer have to run to your local coffee shop to get that perfect cappuccino in the morning, you can make one with no hassle from the comfort of your own home.

Most cappuccino and espresso makers force water at high pressure through coffee grounds, giving the resulting brew a strong and rich flavour. With one of these machines, you can make the best cappuccinos, espressos or even creamy lattés.

Most systems use grounds but some do use pods so be careful which system you choose.

Pods vs Grounds vs Beans

The difference between coffee pods, grounds and beans is often a source of confusion. There is good reason that all 3 exist and you need to check what you would like to use before checking and purchasing your system.

Pods

Coffee podsCoffee Pods are perhaps the easiest option. With very little cleaning up and lots of brands and flavours to choose from, coffee pods are a popular choice for those who intend to make a single mug of coffee with their drinks maker. Flavour options include morning blends, caramel, vanilla, cinnamon and many others and you can even choose pods from your favourite brands such as Starbucks.

Pods are not all the same however, and you need to ensure that you choose the right pods for your system. Some systems are able to use any pods, and brands such as Starbucks utilise K cups which are a hard carton like pod. Other systems require softer pods which can look like tea bags, so make sure you check before purchasing a coffee maker.

Grounds

coffee groundsSome systems will only accept coffee grounds. These are coffee beans that have been ground into granules that are then inserted into the coffee filter. You can buy ready ground beans in packets, simply scoop out your desired (or the specified) amount of grounds, put it into your systems filter or paper filter if one is required, and start brewing!

Beans

coffee beansFor the freshest and most flavoursome aromatic coffee, freshly grinding your own coffee beans is definitely the best way to go. Beans stay fresh for longer than grounds, exhibit a delicious aroma as soon as they are ground (yes, even before brewing!) and are much easier to store and transport. That’s all before mentioning that the price is much lower!

The only downside to buying coffee beans is that you do need a grinder in order to use them. Some systems have them inbuilt, but if you don’t want to shell out for an expensive system with an inbuilt grinder, then you can pick up coffee grinders separately for fairly low prices. Most can also grind your herbs and spices!

Milk Frothers

CappuccinoAh the milk frother. The device that makes your coffee just a bit more special. The truth is, that luxury cappuccino isn’t so hard to make at home. With one of these devices you can have as many frothy coffees as you want, without spending a fortune in a luxury coffee house.

Some systems come with milk frothers built in. If you are purchasing an espresso and cappuccino maker or a high end barista style coffee system, then you might be lucky enough to have one included in your purchase. If not, don’t worry, you can buy milk frothers separately and even top your instant coffee (gasp!) to make it look like your coffee house favourite.

We find that heated milk frothers are the best as they gently heat the milk whilst whipping it, making a more foamy top, but if you don’t want to spend the extra, then there are a number of handheld whisks that can also do the job.

If your system sports a milk wand, never fear, whilst they do take some getting used to, once you master the technique the results are second to none. We’ve found the best way to use one is to have the milk in a mug or jug (it will stir and then expand quite a bit so be sure there is enough space) put the milk wand into the milk an hold the mug or jug at a 45 degree angle whilst the frother works its magic. After your milk is all bubbly, bang the mug or jug on the counter a few times to pop an big bubbles for a smoother froth. Pour on your coffee (you may need to scoop the thick froth out) and serve with a dusting of chocolate powder or a drizzle of caramel sauce. Yum!

Coffee Bean Grinders

coffee grinder As previously mentioned, using coffee beans makes the most aromatic and rich coffee. To use beans, you will need to grind them before brewing your coffee. Some systems come with inbuilt grinders, and whilst these are excellent systems, they can be somewhat pricey.

If your system does not have an inbuilt bean grinder, never fear! There are a number of different coffee grinders on the market starting at reasonably low prices. With these devices you can even grind your own spices!

Coffee Filters

coffee filtersBefore you can start making your coffee, you need to be sure that you have the filter for your system.

Some coffee makers use paper filters which must be disposed of after use, these can be bought in multipacks and don’t require washing after use.

Some systems use a permanent basket style filter, which can be washed and reused. If your system uses a permanent filter then they are often included with the machine.

Be sure to check which filters your system needs and that they are included to ensure you aren’t disappointed when you get it out of the box!

Best Juicer For Everything

Omega J8004 Nutrition Center Commercial Masticating Juicer Review

Omega J8004 Juicer ReviewPossibly the most majestic model on the list, we had to include the Omega J8004. This dream machine is not only a fantastic juicer, but will also make nut butters, such as peanut butter, baby food, dips, such as salsa, milks such as almond or soy milk, and will even make spaghetti or breadsticks in seconds. Not only this, but the Omega J8004 is even capable of grinding your coffee beans and spices, as well as mincing herbs and garlic.

This truly is the best machine on our list, it seems a shame to simply call the Omega J8004 a juicer, since it has so many other functions, however, with juicing in mind it has the ability to squeeze all the juice out of fruits and vegetables, whilst ensuring that their nutritional value remains and pure colours are not compromised. Furthermore, after the fruit has been squeezed, the pulp then goes into a second stage, ensuring that every drop of juice is extracted for maximum efficiency.

Easy to clean and maintain, the Omega J8004 is the ultimate kitchen gadget.

Pros

  • Does a lot more than just juices – spaghetti, peanut butter, dips etc
  • Easy to assemble, operate, and clean
  • Dual stage juicer
  • 15 year warranty

Cons

  • Large price tag
  • Not the most attractive design

Buyers Guide

So you’ve decided to dive into the world of juicing, but you’re still not sure what some of the jargon means, or what features are available? We’ve put together a buyers guide to help you to fully understand what you want and need from your juicer, so you can be sure that you’re making the most informed decision and can purchase the right model for you.

Make sure you get a juicer not a blender!

Juicer vs BlenderYou wouldn’t be the first to make this mistake, juicers and smoothie makers (or blenders) are completely different! Whilst a juicer squeezes and extracts only the juice, filtering out the pulp, smoothie makers and blenders simply liquefy the whole fruit or vegetable. The result is a much thicker drink which, whilst also can be nice, may be a bit of a shock if you just wanted a glass of pulp free orange juice!

Masticating  vs Centrifugal

Centrifugal

Breville BJE430SIL ReviewCentrifugal juicers are definitely a good place to start if you are a newbie. With a lower price and often dishwasher safe parts, they make juicing easy and affordable. Centrifugal models often have multiple speeds for different types of produce and the size of the feeder tube can vary, so depending on the size you could potentially juice whole fruits and vegetables without the need to chop them first.

Centrifugal juicers have pulp collectors and you need to decide what type of collector you want, we recommend an external collector because that way if you are planning to make a lot of juice you won’t need to take your device apart in order to empty the contents of the pulp collector, simply empty the external collector and continue.

Often more compact, the centrifugal models are easy to store, and with some models even having compartments for the cable, they won’t make a mess of your cupboards.

Masticating

Omega J8004 Juicer ReviewMasticating juicers are really a step up from centrifugal juicers. They require a bigger budget and more patience, but the end results are worth it. On average, masticating juicers manage to squeeze more juice out of your produce, so that you won’t need to use as much in order to make the same amount of juice, saving you money in the long run. They also function much more quietly than the average centrifugal machine.

These types of juicers do take longer to deliver the results however, which is how they  earned their other name as “slow juicers”. Masticating juicers can often do more than just juice however, with some having the ability to make pasta, nut butters and even milks such as almond or soy milk.

Another advantage that the masticating models have over the centrifugal models, is its ability to juice wheatgrass and other such produce which centrifugal juicers often cannot do.

Masticating models are a really good kitchen gadget, and if you are likely to use your machine often for more than just its juicing abilities, then spending a little more on one might be the right choice for you.

Unfortunately, though useful in many ways, masticating juicers are often not dishwasher friendly, and so you may have to spend a little extra time to make sure it is thoroughly cleaned by hand.

washing juicerDishwasher safe

Perhaps one of the most desirable features in any food related machine is the ability to break it down into parts and put it in the dishwasher to save on washing up time.

Most centrifugal juicers have dishwasher safe parts, whereas masticating juicers often need to be washed by hand.

All juicers need to be washed after every use in order to avoid buildup and clogging.

 Feeder tube size

Juicer Feeder TubeThe feeder tube is where you put the produce that you want to juice. Different makes and models have varying sizes of feeder tube, so it’s best to check the sizes before you buy. If your machine has a small feeder tube, then you will have to chop up your produce before you put it into the machine, however larger feeder tubes are often able to handle produce whole, which minimises time taken and washing up.

Masticating models all tend to have smaller feeder tubes and therefore need the produce to be chopped before the process can begin. They are also prone to clogging and it is therefore vital to ensure that you thoroughly clean the machine after each use and do not overload it.

That concludes our guide to the 5 Best Juicers 2017. We hope you enjoyed the reviews and have a better understanding of the different models and their features from our buyers guide. Feel free to comment, we’d love to hear what you thought of the list or even share some of your own knowledge to help other people make the right choice!

Best All Rounder

Wemo Insight Switch Smart Plug

In our search for the best smart plugs, we came across the Wemo Insight Switch Smart Plug and it quickly became our favourite. This device is easy to install, easy to use, and has loads of helpful extras that will make your home smarter and more efficient than ever before.

Let’s start by mentioning the Wemo App. This well thought out little app can be used on any smart phone or tablet with a minimum of android 4.4, or IOS 9.0. The best part is that the app is totally free and allows you to control any devices that are plugged into the smart unit from anywhere, anytime.

Cons

  • Large plug and may not fit in smaller sockets / spaces

iDevices Switch

idevices switch

If you use an Iphone or Ipad, then the iDevices Switch may be the best option for you. Originally designed for Apple devices to work with smart Apple Homekit technology, although now also compatible with andriod, the unit is quick and easy to set up, coming with a quick start guide and is easily operated through Siri or Amazon Alexa if you have an Amazon Echo device.

The unit itself is designed to avoid extended wall distance, so once plugged into the socket, the smart device you wish to control using it can be plugged in on the right hand side of the unit. On the left hand side is a switch which allows manual control of the device, one of the best features, meaning if your wifi goes down you can still turn your devices on and off.

The iDevices Switch has an LED strip at the front of the unit, which can also be controlled through Siri or Alexa, or the iDevices app, separately from the device which is plugged into the unit. We found this to be quite useful as a night light type device. This can also be set to whichever colour you prefer in the app or via Siri commands.

It may be helpful to point out here that when setting up your switch, the nightlight is already set up as “light” so if you plug a light into the unit you might want to rename it to avoid confusion, especially when using Siri commands. This nightlight is only controllable via your smart phone and the power button on the side of the device is only for turning power to your device (plugged into the smart plug) on and off. TP-Link Smart Plug

    TP-Link Smart Plug

The TP-Link Smart Plug is a great little device that comes complete with a 2 year warranty for your own peace of mind. This is definitely one of the best smart plugs that we tested, as it was easy to use right out of the box. We found that even after a power outage the device restarts and keeps its old settings and connections, which is great if you live somewhere that gets bad storms and experiences outages.

This smart plug is Alexa compatible, making it easy to control your devices without even having to turn your phone screen on if you wish, simply assign a name to each smart plug that you wish to use with the voice control and you’re ready to go. Click here to Read More

    Wemo Mini Smart Plug

    Wemo Mini Smart Plug

The Wemo Mini Smart Plug is a wonderful little device which is much less bulky than the Wemo Insight Smart Plug. This means that unlike with the Wemo Insight, you are able to stack two of theWemo Minis in the same power outlet with ease, allowing you to control as many devices as you have sockets in the room.

The Wemo Mini uses the same sleek app as the Wemo Insight, making it easy to navigate and locate the devices which you want to control. From the app you are able to set schedules, control your devices when you are away from home, and even use Amazons Alexa for a completely hands-free smart home experience.

Due to the fact that it uses the same app, the Wemo Mini also features the useful away mode, which acts as a deterrent to would-be burglars. Your lights will turn on and off throughout the specified away period, giving the impression of somebody moving about your home.

This device is also compatible with Nest, allowing you to control your home in a number of ways whilst away from home, including thermostat control, fan control and having full control of your lights, so you never need come home to a dark house again.

Unfortunately unlike the Wemo Insight, the Wemo Mini is unable to track electrical usage, which we found to be a bit disappointing considering the app is the same. Nevertheless, the Wemo Mini is no less capable of its core functionality than any other Smart Plug on this list, and we felt that it needed some recognition considering it is compatible with IFTTT making it a customisable and versatile unit.

    Pros

  • Supports IFTTT
  • Supports Nest
  • Supports Amazon Echo
  • Doesn’t block other sockets
  • Away Mode
  • Can be used while away from home

  • Cons

  • Doesn’t track power usage

    Best Budget Smart Plug

    Hausbell W701 Smart Wi-Fi Plug

    Hausbell W701 Smart Wi-Fi Plug

When reviewing the Hausbell W701 Smart Wi-Fi Plug we were a little confused at first, as when they arrived they were grey, rather than white as was shown in the listing. However, as it turned out we had missed that it was specified it was grey in the description so if the colour of the unit is important to you then do make sure you check.

The unit is quick and easy to set up, only needing to connect to your wifi which can be done through the UCSmart app. You need only scan the relevant QR code which is on the box, and install the app to begin quick setup.  However, if you have an Amazon Echo, then it might be best to try a different app. When using the UCSmart app which is suggested for the device, you are only able to pair the plug to your smart phone, but having done a little digging and testing of different apps, we found that it is actually possible to pair the device to Alexa. The best app we found for this was the Tuya Smart App, which within minutes of being downloaded had hooked us up to Alexa.

You are able to rename all your devices using these apps as well, which makes it easy to know which appliances you are turning on and off. Not only that, but there are a number of ways in which you can control your devices using this smart plug. Firstly you can set a conventional timer for your devices to turn on and off at specified times. This can be useful to turn your lights on and off when you’re out of the house. You can also set a countdown timer to turn your devices on or off, for example, if you want your bread maker to start making your bread in 3 hours, then you can set a 3 hour delay timer. Finally you can choose to manually control your devices via Alexa if using the Tuya app, or your smart phone.

The device remembers your timers and settings so that even if you leave the house with your phone, your lights will still come on at the specified time, which is useful if you go away and want to deter burglars.

Although this plug does not have many of the fancy features of some of the others, it is an excellent purchase for the price, especially as you get 2 in a pack! The only thing that we could fault with this plug for its price is the fact that there is a bright LED on it, meaning that if you are using these in the bedroom they might be a little bright when trying to sleep. Otherwise, we found these to be the best smart plugs for the price.

    Pros

  • Timer / Countdown / Manual controls
  • Supports Amazon Echo (when using Tuya app)
  • Can be used when away from home

  • Cons

  • Suggested app doesn’t support Amazon Echo
  • Bright LED on socket (Can’t work out how to turn it off)

    Best No Fuss Smart Plug

Orvibo Wi-Fi Smart Socket Outlet Plug

Orvibo Wi-Fi Smart Socket Outlet Plug

The Orvibo Wi-Fi Smart Socket Outlet Plug allows you to switch your electrical devices on and off using your smart phone with their smart plug compatible app. Anything you want to be remotely controllable can be plugged into one of these sockets and is, upon a quick and easy setup, transformed into a smart device which can be controlled from anywhere in the world.

You are also able to set schedules through the app, which is compatible with android 4.0 and higher and iOS 6 and higher, so that you don’t always have to manually turn your devices on and off.

There are no whistles or bells with this smart plug, it does what it says on the tin and nothing more, which is why we have named it our best no fuss option. Whilst its core functionality works great, we found this to be one of the more boring of the smart plugs we tested. The device does not support any other smart devices or systems such as Amazon Alexa or Nest, and doesn’t track power usage.

If you want a simple device that simply allows you to turn your devices on and off from your phone or on timers and schedules then these could be the best smart plugs for you. Personally, we like the more techy devices better!

    Pros

  • Timers and schedules can be set
  • Easy setup
  • App is simple and easy to use
  • Can be used when away from home

  • Cons

  • Doesn’t support Amazon Echo
  • Doesn’t support Nest
  • Doesn’t support IFTTT
  • No away mode
  • No power usage tracking

Ankuoo REC Lite White Wi-Fi Smart Plug

Ankuoo REC Lite White Wi-Fi Smart Plug

The Ankuoo REC Lite Smart Plug is a device which is available in different socket types for all over the world, making it the best worldwide smart plug. It is easy to use, simply plug in, open the app and you will be guided through the setup.

The app has a nice interface, which is easy to navigate and understand. When looking into the devices you will find that you are able to set up schedules and timers for any device which is plugged into one of the sockets.

Not only can you set schedules, but if you own and Amazon Alexa product, then you will be able to control your devices with your voice. Once it is set up, all you will need to do is tell Alexa which device you want turning on or off, and she will do it.

The device has a handy anti-theft setting which is the same as the away mode on other devices, making it seem as though there is somebody in your house, even when you aren’t home. This may be useful for those who spend a lot of time away and are concerned about the safety of their home.

This smart device and its associated app are compatible with both android and iOS, meaning that if you have people with both Apple and Android devices in your family, everyone is still able to use them.

We found that it can be quite tricky to get Alexa connected to the device, and in our search for a solution, we also found that other people were having this problem too, so it may take some trial and error to get this feature working, which isn’t ideal.

    Pros

  • Works with Amazon Echo
  • Away Mode
  • Use when away from home
  • Can set schedules

  • Cons

  • Tricky to connect to Amazon Echo
  • Doesn’t support IFTTT
  • Doesn’t support Nest

iHOME ISP5 Home Control Smart Plug

iHOME ISP5 Home Control Smart Plug

The iHOME ISP5 Home Control Smart Plug is one of the more exciting smart plugs on the market. Compatible with both android and apple devices, it is easy to set up and can be used immediately with the free newly updated iHome Control app.

This smart plug works with all Alexa devices and we have found that the setup is quite easy, Alexa found and connected to the device quickly and was soon taking voice commands. Not only does this plug have Alexa support but Siri can also be used to control the devices which are plugged in, with complete support for Apple Homekit already integrated.

Not only is this smart plug compatible with Alexa, Siri and Appple Homekit, but it is also fully compatible with Samsung Smart Things, Nest and Wink, giving you more options of how you want to control your smart home.

One of the best features of this plug is that it is slim so that you are able to plug more than one into an outlet at any one time. Otherwise you could leave the other outlet free to plug something straight in without a smart plug, the smart plug in no way obstructs the other sockets.

The plugs can be grouped into rooms or other groups in the app if you’d like to control a whole room simultaneously, or if you’d like to set a schedule for your morning routine you can do that too, so your lights will be on and your morning coffee ready by the time you go downstairs.

We did, however, find one issue with this smart plug. We initially had issues connecting it to Apple Homekit, and found it a bit tricky to keep it connected. That being said, when it worked, the whole experience was seamless.

    Pros

  • Easy setup
  • Schedules
  • Group plugs for easy use
  • Works with Amazon Alexa
  • Works with Nest
  • Works with Wink
  • Works with Apple Homekit
  • Works with Samsung SmartThings

  • Cons

  • Connectivity issues with Apple Homekit
  • No Power usage indicators

    Only for Apple Users

    Koogeek Smart Plug, WiFi

    Koogeek Smart Plug, WiFi.

The Koogeek Smart Plug is the best one for the Apple lovers. Supporting only Apple devices and integrating Siri voice control, the Koogeek Smart Plug allows iOS users to control their home via their favourite Apple devices, be that the iPad, iPod Touch or the iPhone.

Not only is this compatible with only Apple devices, but it is also only compatible with the Apple Homekit, and does not support Amazon Alexa, Nest or any other services. We found this to be a little limiting in choice. Though these are clearly not the best smart units for Android users, there is an array of features waiting to be used by those with Apple devices.

Schedules and timers can be set to ensure that your devices are not on for longer than they should be, or to deter would be burglars during the times when you’re not at home. The app also allows you to monitor your energy consumption to ensure that your home is running as efficiently as possible, and help you save on power bills.

You don’t need to worry about having left electric heaters or appliances switched on, as with the handy app you are able to turn off devices from anywhere in the world, giving you the best peace of mind possible.

The plug worked really well with Apple Homekit and was easy to set up through the free app. We had no problems connecting and were impressed with the speed of setup.

Unfortunately, although the unit looks quite compact, we found that it actually blocked the second socket on the wall, so we were only able to plug in one of them in each dual wall socket.

    Pros

  • Power usage monitor
  • Supports Siri
  • Supports Apple Homekit

  • Cons

  • Does not support Android
  • Does not support Amazon Echo
  • Does not support Nest
  • Does not support IFTTT
  • Unit blocks other sockets

Edimax Wi-Fi Smart Plug with Energy Management

    Edimax Wi-Fi Smart Plug

Last but by no means least, is the Edimax Wi-Fi Smart Plug with Energy Management. This is one of the devices which works as well as the more expensive models. Although it may not support as many features, the Edimax Wi-Fi Smart Plug does come with energy use monitoring, allowing you to track your energy usage to ensure that your home is running as efficiently as possible. In addition, you are able to set an energy use limit for devices, which will cut them off and send you a notification once the limit has been reached, so you don’t need to worry about any unexpected energy bills.

With this smart plug and the free app you are able to easily set schedules for your devices, meaning that you can have your coffee ready in the morning and your lights on when you come home in the evening. You can also use the app wherever you have an internet connection to control your devices.

The three step setup guide makes it really fast and easy to get set up, and best of all it can be done straight from your smartphone. Once using the units, you can receive email notifications which will notify you when your devices turn on and off, so you know that your home is running like clockwork.

The downside to this device is that we felt it was lacking in integration. The plug cannot be used with Siri, Amazon Echo or any other services such as Nest or Samsung SmartThings. However, it works well as a simple smart plug, if you don’t want any extras such as voice control or complete home integration.

    Pros

  • Limit and monitor energy use
  • Schedules
  • Easy and fast setup

  • Cons

  • Doesn’t support Amazon Echo
  • Doesn’t support Nest
  • Remains off after a power outage
  • Some connectivity issues

    Buyers Guide

When looking to purchase the best smart plugs for you, there are a number of features which should be considered. Each smart plug is different and will appeal to different people, so to make sure you get the best smart plug for you and your home, we’ve put together a handy buyers guide to help you decide which plug is best for your lifestyle.

    IFTTT

    IFTTT

IFTTT is a service which allows you to create statements for your smart devices or even social media. By connecting smart devices to IFTTT you can set conditional triggers, for example, you could have your lights turn on when you pull into the driveway, allowing you to get the best out of your smart home.

    Amazon Echo Devices

    amazon echo dot tap

Amazon Echo is the device which brings you the Alexa assistant.

When connected to your compatible smart devices, you need only use your voice to ask Alexa to control your home, so no worries when you have your hands full.

    Samsung SmartThings Support

    samsung smartthings

Samsung Smartthings brings you the best way of connecting all the smart devices in your home to work in perfect harmony. With the SmartThings hub, you can not only use your smart devices and monitor them via the app, but you can add other features such as motion and arrival sensors so your home can work seamlessly for you.

    Apple Homekit Support

    Apple Homekit

Apples Homekit is the Apple device loves answer to a smart home. Working with many different devices it works much like Samsungs SmartThings to have all your smart devices work together. The range of devices that are Homkit enabled include – Lights, locks, thermostats, window shades, security, garage doors, humidifiers, fans, outlets, cameras, doorbells, air purifiers, air conditioners and finally sensors.

    Away Mode

    away mode

Many smart plugs support away mode, which is a setting that makes your home appear to an outsider as though somebody is home. Lights will turn on and off at different times to make it difficult for potential burglars to determine whether or not there is really somebody in the house. Unlike conventional timers, there is no set time that lights will come on and go off, making it impossible for people to track the timer patterns. This feature is especially useful if you go away a lot and are concerned for the security of your home.

    Power monitoring

    wemo insight power monitoring

This feature is a favourite of ours and one of the best ways of monitoring your energy consumption. If you are interested in your power usage and want to monitor or reduce it then make sure to check out the smart plugs with power usage monitoring. These are able to monitor the power that you are using through each device and can even tell you how much your devices are costing you to run. The best smart plugs for power monitoring can tell you each individual device’s power usage, cost and even  give you a monthly average of your entire home (as long as everything is using the smart plugs). We found this to be really useful when trying to reduce your power bills as you can see which devices are the most power hungry, and they might not always be the ones you expect!

    Nest Support

     nest home

Considered as one of the best brands in smart technology, Nest is a range of smart devices that all work together to create a completely smart home. The main item in the range of official nest products is the smart thermostat which helps you to control the temperature of your home no matter where you are. The thermostat will learn your daily routines and adjust your heating to fit your life, saving you money on your energy bills in the process. Not only that, but there are a range of products from nest that can help you run your home more effectively. If your boiler is on the blink, your smart thermostat will let you know. If you burn the toast, Nest protect smoke and carbon monoxide detectors will tell you that there is smoke, and even which room it is in before it progresses to a full alarm. It can also detect the difference between a smouldering and fast burning fire and if the smart carbon monoxide monitor detects danger, it will tell your Nest thermostat to turn off the boiler to avoid any further danger. Furthermore, the smart Nestcams for indoor and outdoor use can help to protect your home, allowing you to see what’s happening anytime, anywhere. Lots of the units in our list support nest, and if you choose one of these then you can integrate just about any device into your nest smart home.

    Amazon Alexa

    amazon echo dot tap

There are 3 different versions of the amazing Alexa assistant. Once you bring Alexa into your home, her many functions make her impossible to live without!

Not only can you use her to create shopping lists, to do lists and set timers, but Alexa can also control your smart home with compatible devices. Simply set up the smart plug devices and you can tell Alexa to turn on the lights, set the coffee machine going and even turn your thermostat up, all with just your voice.

Alexa has IFTTT compatibility so there is no end to the ways in which you can customise your Echo, and with an endless store of skills to try, Alexa is getting smarter every day.

The 3 different devices with the Alexa assistant are the Amazon Echo, Amazon Echo Dot and the Amazon Tap.

    Amazon Echo

    Amazon Echo

The original Amazon Echo is a full size speaker standing at 9.3” tall with full 360 degree sound and far field voice recognition. The speaker does have to be plugged into the wall for use and therefore has limited portability; however, by having multiple echo devices around your home, you will always have access to Alexa when you need her. This is the most expensive device in the range but will give you the best and most immersive audio experience.

    Amazon Echo Dotamazon echo dot

The Amazon Echo Dot is a miniature version of the Echo, but has all the same functions and works just as well. The budget price tag on the Echo Dot means that you can have multiple around your house as they are a fraction of the size and price of the original Echo device, making them the best budget Alexa device.

    Amazon Tap

    amazon tap

The Amazon Tap is the only device which is portable and does not, therefore, have to be plugged into the wall. When fully charged, the amazon tap will give you 9 hours of media playback as well as the Amazon Alexa assistant. The only downside to this device that we found was the fact that it does not incorporate voice activation and you must “tap” the device’s microphone button to use it.

However, the battery life is around 100 minutes, making it one of the most power efficient battery powered hair trimmers on the market and a battery is included in the box! The fact that it is battery powered also means that there are no cables, and the clipper is ready to use straight out of the box, so no waiting for it to charge which can be preferable.

Panasonic ER430K Ear and Nose Trimmer with Vacuum

Our second item on the list is the ER430K Panasonic Ear and Nose Hair Trimmer and yes, it has an inbuilt vacuum to clear away any trimmed nose or ear hairs, meaning that they aren’t left in your nose and ears.

This impressive black and silver nose hair trimmer is designed so that you can comfortably use it in either hand, so whether you’re left or right handed, you will feel completely comfortable and in control.

The curved stainless steel blades are hypoallergenic to avoid any unwanted irritation or rashes, whilst cutting the nose and ear hair safely and hygienically, and can also be used to trim and shape your moustache, beard and sideburns quickly and effectively.

This device is fully waterproof, and therefore can be used on wet or dry nose and ear hair completely safely, and is even safe to use in the shower, where the grips will prevent it from slipping from your grasp.

The fact that it’s waterproof also makes for a very easy to clean device, which can be clean in a matter of seconds after running under some warm water, while a cleaning brush is included for nose or ear hair that proves a little harder to remove. Even better, the vacuum sweeps away most of the hair so minimal cleaning is required; you can simply empty the collection chamber and rinse.

The rotary blade system allows you to get up close to the walls of your nose and ears in order to achieve a very neat and close shave, while the protective cone ensures that you don’t get any nicks or cuts in the process.

When compared to other shavers in the range, this stands out as the quieter of the range.

It boasts a stylish blue and black body, with a durable rubber grip to avoid slips and ensuring that you have full control of the device at all times. Included with this trimmer are 2 eyebrow hair trimming combs, the detailer head and comb with protective cap, an AA battery, cleaning brush and a zippable protective deluxe storage case which neatly stores and protects both the device and its accessories.

Again this clipper is completely waterproof and therefore very easy to clean, just put it under some warm water after use to clear away any trapped nose and ear hairs, with the brush for any stubborn left over particles.

While this clipper works particularly well, it is, as previously mentioned, one of the more expensive on the list, and is also one of the heaviest. Be sure to bear this in mind as weight and size can make a big difference to your shaving experience.

The device comes with a 2 year warranty, but if you register it on norelco.com they will give you an extra 6 months on your warranty for free!

    Pros

    Best Budget Trimmer

Remington MPT-3600Dual Blade Pen Nose Hair & Ear Trimmer

Remington MPT-3600 Dual Blade Pen Trimmer

The Remington MPT-3600 Dual Blade Pen Nose Hair & Ear Trimmer is the best budget touch up hair trimmer on the list. Although it was designed primarily just for touching up your appearance in between trims, it is able to tame your nose and ear hair quickly and easily without the bulkiness of your average nose and ear hair clipping devices.

Complete with tilting head, you can adjust to your own preferred angle, making it a joy to use. Though it may not feel as robust or high quality as the other electric detail trimmers on the list, for the price it is the best clipper available by far, and the titanium, hypoallergenic blades are durable and strong when trimming the nose or ear hair, without causing any irritation to the skin.

The main downside to this device is that although it is able to tackle thick ear and nose hair, the neck is thin and not as durable as you might hope, therefore caution should be taken when using the product not to press too firmly.

A guide comb, battery and 2 of the durable titanium blades are provided, 1 full size and one a detail trimmer.

At just 1.1 x 3.8 x 8.1 inches and 0.8 oz, this is the most lightweight detail device on the list and although it is a simple plastic design, for the price you would struggle to find a better detail trimmer on the market today.

    Pros

    • Lightweight
    • Compact
    • Best budget trimmer for touch uos
    • Adjustable tilting head
    • Hypoallergenic blades
    • Battery included

    Cons

    • Plastic
    • Not as good looking as others
    • The neck is thin and may not last as long as the more expensive trimmers

    Best Eco Friendly Trimmer

Creation Springs Electra-Trim Nose and Ear Hair Trimmer– best for the environment!

Creation Springs Electra-Trim Nose and Ear Hair Trimmer

The Creation Springs Electra-Trim Nose and Ear Hair Trimmer is another excellent device to make it onto the shortlist. Using the sharpest dual action rotary blades available, this nose and ear hair trimmer proves effective in achieving a comfortable, smooth and clean trim.

Problem nose and ear hairs are no match for the blades, of which you get 2 with the device, and the motor is endlessly dependable whilst trimming either wet or dry. This device comes with a triple vented vacuum system much like the Panasonic nose and hair trimmer so that the nuisance left over hair in your ears and nose become a thing of the past.

Creation Springs also care about the world, so this device is also good for the environment if that is a factor that matters to you. Crafted from the strongest impact resistant rubberised recycled plastic, there is no way that this nose, ear and hair trimmer will be easily dropped when in use in the shower.

The staying power of this clipper is immense, just one battery can keep going for months (depending on how much you use it of course) and there is a battery included so you’re good to go straight out of the box!

It is is 100%  waterproof so cleaning the device is no problem as all you need to do is hold it under running water to wash away any leftover hairs that the vacuum didn’t pick up.

Sadly this trimmer has the shortest warranty of all the devices reviewed, but since it seems to be doing well in the durability department, we aren’t too worried! The only mainly lacking area is the light that comes on the device, which unfortunately does little to illuminate your nostrils are you are trimming.

    Pros

    • Triple vented vacuum system
    • Environmentally friendly
    • Battery included
    • Durable
    • Extra blade included

    Cons

    • Warranty only 1 year
    • Light doesn’t work particularly well

Panasonic ER-GN30-K Nose Ear Hair Trimmer

With its smooth design and matte finish, the Panasonic ER-GN30-K Nose Ear and Hair Trimmer is a fast and easy way to keep well groomed. Keep your moustache, beard, nose, ears, and eyebrow hair in shape with the ultra-sharp dual edge stainless steel rotary blades as the protective head has been designed to naturally guide hairs into the blades for a clean cut. There is no pulling or nipping of nose or ear hair with this clipper, as the rounded edges ensure that the skin cannot be reached by the blades, so you don’t have to worry about injury.

This device is fully waterproof and can be completely immersed in water, so it’s perfect either for use in the shower or use dry for a quick touch up on the go.

It also has a built in vortex cleaning setting which makes cleaning it really fast and easy, simply put the device in water and then switch the cleaning setting on. After turning it on, the hair trimmer will draw water into its system in a vortex which will whisk through the device, removing any trapped nose and ear hairs and skin cells in the process. For particles that are more difficult to shift, there is a cleaning brush included in the box as well as a cap to protect the head.

The Panasonic ER-GN30-K is a super lightweight nose, hair and ear trimmer for its size and quality, and with its hypoallergenic blades it won’t cause you any irritation or rashes that some other devices do.

The battery lasts up to 90 minutes running time, and can just be replaced when it runs out, however we found with this hair clipper was that once opened, it was quite difficult to get the battery pack back on.

    • Dual edge rotary blades
    • 2 year warranty

    Cons

Andis Fast Trim Personal Trimmer for Nose, Ears, and Eyebrows

Andis Fast Trim Personal Trimmer for Nose, Ears, and Eyebrows

It would be all too easy to dismiss the Andis Fast Trim Personal Nose, Ear & Eyebrow Hair Trimmer due to the fact that it’s so inexpensive, however if you do need a robust budget nose hair trimmer then this could be the one for you. Unlike the Remington MPT-3600 Dual Blade Pen, it doesn’t have a thin neck which could easily snap off.

This cheap and cheerful rotary style clipper simply does what it says on the box, it trims your nose and ear hair. No fancy gadgets, torches or vacuums, but it does what it is supposed to do and it does it well.

The system is simple and easy to use; in fact, it is excellent value for money in that when compared to other, higher priced alternatives, this nose hair device performs its primary function just as well.

The only real problem we had was when trying to use it as an eyebrow shaper, we found it quite clumsy, and would therefore not recommend it for this purpose. The Andis also comes with the irritating requirement that it must be oiled before each use.

To clean it simply run the rust-proof surgical stainless steel head under warm running water, but be careful not to get the main body of the device wet, as the manufacturer do not list it as waterproof.

It runs on just one AA battery, which is included.

    Pros

    • Excellent value for very little money
    • Trims nose and ears as well as expensive brands.
    • 5 year warranty

    Cons

    • Clumsy when trying to shape eyebrows
    • Needs to be oiled before each use

ToiletTree Professional Water Resistant Heavy Duty Steel Nose Trimmer

ToiletTree Professional Water Resistant Heavy Duty Steel Nose Trimmer

The ToiletTree Professional Nose & Ear Hair Trimmer Water Resistant Heavy Duty Steel rotary style trimmer with a high quality steel casing is perfect for a mid-range budget whilst not sacrificing quality. When looking in this price range the majority of devices will be plastic so the durable steel case is a real plus.

Using this nose hair trimmer is a comfortable experience, with the blades tucked behind an effective guard which stops them from ever coming into contact with your skin.

The blades are sharp and cut the hairs instead of pulling at them as some cheaper models (not on this list) can, and the head is the perfect shape to reach along the inside of your nose and ears.

This device also has an LED light to help guide you to the hard to see and reach nose hairs making the process quick and easy even for newbie nose and ear hair trimmers.

The fact that it is water resistant means that you can use it in the shower. To clean it you need only run the head under warm water to wash away any trapped nose hairs. However care should be taken to avoid fully immersing the device in water because it is not listed as fully waterproof so water may be able to get into the hair trimmer under pressure causing it to fail.

It does not come with any extra heads or a pouch and the single AA battery that is required is not included. It has been noticed that the battery compartment can be slightly flimsy and prone to breaking.

    Pros

    • High quality steel casing
    • LED light
    • Water resistant

    Cons

    • Not waterproof (don’t fully immerse)
    • Battery not included
    • Battery compartment prone to breakage

    • Strong motor
    • Durable aluminium casing
    • Great for travelling

    Buyers Guide

Depending on how you intend to use your nose hair trimmer and what you would like out of it, there are a number of things to look out for, for example, if you find it difficult to see nose or ear hairs that are bothering you then you may wish to buy a device with a light on it. Here is a list of some features that you might want to consider when purchasing your clipper.

    Type of Trimmer

    Manual

    manual nose hair trimmer

A manual nose hair clipper is operated using both hands to manually turn the blades once the device is in your nose, these may be preferable to people who don’t want bulky battery operated trimmers or don’t like the idea of motorised blades.

    Rotary

    Rotary Trimmer

Some people like rotary electric nose and ear hair trimmers which are encased in a round protective shield and can be rotated around the nostril in order to cut off any unwanted nose or ear hairs.

    Angled

    angled nose hair trimmer

Angled electric nose and ear hair trimmers make it easier to reach inside the nostril or ear to trim those pesky hairs. Some people prefer these trimmer types to the manual or rotary.

    Fixed Head / Removable Head

Phillips NT517549 Norelco Nose Hair Trimmer1

If a trimmer has a fixed head it means that it cannot be removed, whereas removable heads can be swapped and changed easily if a replacement is ever needed. Removable heads also often come with extra attachments to help you trim different areas.

    Features

    Waterproof

    Waterproof Nose Hair Trimmer

If you plan to use your nose and ear hair trimmer in the shower or damp environment then you need to ensure that it is waterproof. If the trimmer is not waterproof and you use it in the shower or it gets damp or steamy, then there is a chance that it will stop working or could even give you a shock. This is very important to consider if you intend on keeping your nose and ear hair clipper in the bathroom.

    LED Light

    nose hair trimmer with light

If you have trouble locating hairs in your ears a nose, then you may wish to consider purchasing a ear and nose hair trimmer that has an inbuilt LED light. The light will illuminate your nostrils and ear making it much easier to locate and remove awkward hairs.

    Vacuum

    nose hair trimmer with vacuum

If you find little hairs left over in your ears and nose after trimming you might want to consider a trimmer with a vacuum attachment. These ear and nose hair trimmers are able to sweep away the unwanted hair into a removable compartment as it is trimmed in order to avoid such irritants. They also make much less mess in the bathroom due to less hair being dropped.

    Blade

    nose hair trimmer blades

You may also wish to consider what particular blade you are interested in. The most common are stainless steel and titanium. Stainless s steel blades are the most common and whilst they do a job as well as titanium blades, the titanium has the added benefit of being completely rust resistant, so you never need to worry about your blades rusting.

     Safety

Getting a cut inside your ear or nose is the worst! Ensuring that the trimmer that you purchase has a blade shield will help you to avoid any nasty mishaps while you trim. Also if you plan on using your ear and nose hair trimmer in the shower, it is always best to ensure that you have purchased a waterproof hair trimmer, to avoid nasty shocks or your nose hair clipper breaking.

    Durability

How durable is the nose or ear hair trimmer that you have chosen? Will it be able to stand up to the regularity at which you will use it and the volume of nose and ear hair which it will need to trim on a regular basis? If it is for travel you will need to consider that it will be being moved around a lot and may crack or break if it is a thin plastic and gets banged.

    Size and Weight

Are you happy with a large and heavy hair trimmer or will you find it clumsy? You need to consider if you will be travelling with it and how its size and weight will impact you. If you do plan to travel and you have a large and heavy nose or ear hair trimmer then you may struggle if you wish to keep it in your pocket, however if you choose not to travel with your hair trimmer, will a smaller travel style trimmer perform for you as well as the bigger hair trimmers will?

    Style

All styles of clippers have individual benefits. The most common rotary hair trimmers are often very straight, whereas if you prefer an angled trimmer, you will find that they can make it much easier to reach hairs deeper within the nose and ears safely. If you are often on the go and want to stay looking your best, then it may be better for you to choose a slimmer and more lightweight design that you can carry with you – manual and pen style rotary trimmers are the best in this instance.

Getting the Best Out of Your Trimmer

One thing that all hair trimmers have in common is that they need taking care of. In order to keep your hair trimmer working at its best there are a few things that you should consider.

    Oiling

Some hair trimmers need oiling before each use to ensure that they last due to the nature of their job, the fact that they have to cut so many hairs so regularly means that they may need maintenance to ensure that you always get the most comfortable cut and also to ensure that they don’t clog up with hair and stop working.

Not only this, but hair trimmer blades are often rubbing against each other or a shield throughout their operation, and ensuring that they are well lubricated helps them to glide smoothly instead of causing friction which could lead to overheating and dulling of the blades. If your hair trimmers state that they should be oiled regularly then you must ensure that this is done in order to prolong their life and keep them in top condition.

To oil the blades of your hair trimmer, hold it with the blades facing down, then put 1 – 2 drops of hair trimmer oil on the blades and allow it to run for a few seconds. Wipe off any excess oil when finished, it really is that quick and easy.

    Cleaning After Use

Always check the maintenance instructions with your hair trimmer to ensure that you clean them correctly. Some hair trimmers come with an automatic cleaning function which can be used to help cleaning them, however if your hair trimmer doesn’t, ensure that you clean it out after every use to keep it trimming hair effectively and in top condition.

To clean your hair trimmer, hold it with the blades facing down and put 1 drop of hand soap on the blades, turn it on until the soap froths up and then hold the blades of the hair trimmer in water and turn on again until the soap is all gone. For extra stubborn hairs, trimmers usually come with a cleaning brush which can be used to sweep them away.

For a manual hair trimmer, they can usually be unscrewed quite easily, you don’t always have to do this, but it helps to stop it clogging if you give it a thorough clean every now and then, simply wash with soap and warm water after use.

    Don’t use too much Pressure

If you press too hard with your nose hair trimmers, you risk damaging the trimmer, but more importantly yourself! You don’t need to apply much pressure and simply putting the hair trimmer inside your nose and rotating it around the area that needs trimming should be enough to remove your excess hairs without damaging yourself or the trimmer.

Keep it in a Safe Place

You will need to keep your hair trimmer in a safe place where it is not likely to get knocked off a surface or get wet if it is not waterproof. Inside a bathroom cabinet or in your bedroom are usually safe enough.

Some hair trimmers come with a protective case or pouch; this is a good way of keeping all the elements of your hair trimmer together as sometimes they come with extra blades, accessories and cleaning equipment. If your hair trimmer didn’t come with this, you may wish to purchase one separately as they can also keep it safe while in transit.

    Don’t Leave Dead Batteries in

It is never a good idea to leave dead batteries in any device, as they can leak and cause corrosion to the inside electronics. If your batteries need replacing then always remove the old batteries as soon as they have run out to avoid this, it doesn’t harm the device to have no batteries inside until you can get new ones.

And that concludes our guide to the best nose hair trimmers 2018, we hope that the guide has helped you to make an informed decision on which type of trimmer would best suit you, as well as making you aware of ways to maintain and get the best out of your trimmer.
